Greeting in His Name,

We have entered the last quarter of the year. I hope you are as encouraged as I am to end this year strong. Stay focused! Pursue your goals. Do not give up! God is with you. So, with that being said, today's blog is entitled Connected To The Power. Hope you find some inspiration, conviction, and queries.

shalom and love,

heidi

Seven Up, originally released two weeks before the stock market crash of 1929, was a drink that was used for medicinal purposes. It is said to have contained lithium citrate, a mood-stabilizing drug, until 1948.  I researched this mood-stimulating drink because of a topic given for a morning Seven Up Hour of Power. The word given was not to get our moods stabilized by a drug but to let the working power of the Holy Spirit lift us UP. It was not given to entertain but to make us aware of an all-powerful God.

As I mentioned, the 1929 crash was the signpost of the 12-year Great Depression. During this time, many people suffered, the steel industry declined, construction projects were sluggish, automobile sales went down, and consumer debt went up… much like what we see today in our society. But today, we have added crime rise, political plots, rampant growth of sexual immorality, homosexuality gone wild, and church attendance on the decline.

This is where I turn our attention to Psalms 40:17: My Lord, I am only a poor, helpless man, but please pay attention to me. You are my helper, the one who can save me. My God, don’t be too late. We all know that God is never late. He is always on time.  Before the crash of 1929, it is well-known that at least three attempts were made to halt the downward slide, which was inevitable.  How many times have we been in a downward spiral and have had to cry out as David in Psalm 40:17: My Lord, I am only a poor, helpless man, but please pay attention to me. You are my helper, the one who can save me. My God, don’t be too late.

I encourage you to look closely at the Psalmist David, who possibly wrote this Psalm after his son Absalom tried to usurp [take] the throne from which David was restored. He wrote this Psalm while anguished at heart that his son was dead but yet trusting the Lord, trusting in the omniscient God of his forefathers. John Wesley refers to this Psalm as a prayer of salvation. And we can hear the call for salvation in verse 17.

Look at how David first acknowledged God—My Lord. David knew who was in charge. Do you know who is in charge? He knew that only God could handle what he was facing. David was facing an overthrow of his kingdom. What are you facing? A broken home, wayward children, or a job termination? You better call on the name of the Lord. Calling on him keeps you connected to the power. Let me pause here: the power we are discussing is not to be abused or misused.  You can’t even access it until you are in fellowship with the Lord.  Ask Simon, the sorcerer in Act 8, who wanted to purchase the power but was told by Peter to repent of the evil of his heart.  We can't buy the power.

Then David acknowledged his frailty – I am only a poor, helpless man.  He was not poor in terms of wealth, but he knew he couldn’t do anything without God.  How often do we try to orchestrate our lives, only to have to run back to God to help us try to straighten things out?  David knew, and we must know, how important it is to acknowledge God - EARLY. Don’t wait! I need you because I’m poor, “depressed in mind, or maybe it’s overwhelmed in circumstances” and helpless, “needy - oppressed.” By acknowledging his frailty, he kept himself connected to the power. People of God stay connected to the power.

David goes on to say, please pay attention to me. Why? Because I know you are my helper – the one that intervenes; if anyone can put their hand down into this powerless place, God, it’s you, and you can regenerate, restore, and save me.  How many of us know the saving power of Jesus Christ? How many times can we testify of his redemptive power? If you have not experienced this POWER, today is a good day to connect to the power.

POWER DECLARATION:

'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.' 'For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.' 'The Lord is my strength and my shield; in Him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to Him.' 'Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.' [Philippians 4:13, 2 Timothy 1:7, Psalm 28:7, Ephesians 6:10]

George Carlin sez...

"I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get

older. Then it dawned on me . . . they're cramming for their final exam."
