Volume 14 Issue 5

Greeting in His Name,

Our worth in the eyes of God is immensely valuable. Each of us carries a soul of great significance. If you’re uncertain about your worth, I encourage you to turn to Psalm 139 for guidance. With that in mind, I hope you enjoy today’s blog titled "Know Your Worth." May you find inspiration, conviction, and thought-provoking questions within it.

shalom and love,

heidi

In the verse preceding this passage, Jesus warns his disciples about trouble, but he goes on to encourage them in the passage we are reading today.

Matthew 10:25 – 33

26 "So don't be afraid of those people. Everything that is hidden will be shown. Everything that is secret will be made known. 27 I tell you all this secretly, but I want you to tell it publicly. Whatever I tell you privately, you should shout for everyone to hear. 28 "Don't be afraid of people. They can kill the body, but they cannot kill the soul. The only one you should fear is God, the one who can send the body and the soul to be destroyed in hell. 29 When birds are sold, two small birds cost only a penny. But not even one of those little birds can die without your Father knowing it. 30 God even knows how many hairs are on your head. 31 So don't be afraid. You are worth more than a whole flock of birds. 32 "If you stand before others and are willing to say you believe in me, then I will tell my Father in heaven that you belong to me. 33 But if you stand before others and say you do not believe in me, then I will tell my Father in heaven that you do not belong to me.

Don't be afraid of people, and don't hesitate to share your faith with them. Most of us could use a boost of confidence, especially when faced with new and different challenges. Many struggle to recognize their own worth, and the world often diminishes us. More often than not, it simply ignores our existence. In this kind of environment, building and maintaining a sense of self-worth is a challenging task.

Today's Gospel addresses this issue. Jesus was preparing His disciples for their first preaching mission. He understood that the world would not treat them any better than it had treated Him. In verses 26 and 28, Jesus reassures them, saying, "Don't be afraid of people." In verse 28, He adds that while people can kill the body, they cannot kill the soul. The only one to fear is God, who has the power to destroy both body and soul in hell.

To further strengthen their confidence, Jesus reminded them of their personal worth and importance to God. He compared them to the birds of the air in verse 29: "When birds are sold, two small birds cost only a penny. But not even one of those little birds can die without your Father knowing it." Jesus' point is clear: even the most financially insignificant creature, like a sparrow, holds value in God's eyes. Not one of these little birds falls to the ground without God's awareness.

Like sparrows, we often feel small in such a large and indifferent world. In the grand scheme of things, many people may not even be aware that we exist. Among those who do, we wonder how many truly care. Our contributions may seem so minimal that society could carry on without us. This may sound morbid, but for many, it is a realistic perception of life.

However, this is not the case with Jesus. He pointed out that to the world, sparrows are virtually worthless. Yet He insisted that not one of them falls to the ground without the awareness of His Father. From this, Jesus drew the conclusion: "You are worth more than many sparrows."

We may feel small and insignificant, but we are important to God. In times of tragedy, we might feel helpless and forgotten, but we are not. Jesus reiterated that "not a single sparrow falls to the ground without your Father's perception." Life's tragedies can be cruel, making us feel as though we do not matter. However, the truth remains that we do matter to God.

With approximately 5 billion people on Earth, how can any one person be considered valuable among so many? To answer that question, we first need to understand who that individual is. Throughout history, we can name many individuals who made a significant difference—a difference that is still evident today.

If we are talking about a nameless, faceless individual living in the slums of Africa, the answer seems clear: that person may not hold significance for us. Whatever happens to them is unlikely to affect our lives. However, if that individual is a child who shares our home, the situation changes dramatically. We know every detail about that child's life, and anything that happens to them is of utmost importance to us.

Now, returning to the unknown person in Africa, the media plays a role in bringing different social groups into our awareness, presenting their situations to us. Jesus teaches us that with God, our Father, there are no nameless, faceless individuals. Every person on Earth is His child who shares His home. He knows the details of every life and cares deeply about what happens to each one of us. This is what Jesus meant when He said, "Every hair on your head has been counted." So that means there is no need to fear.

Fear is a real emotion. Much of what we see happening in the world today can lead to fear, anxiety, depression, and a host of other troubling feelings. If we're honest, things may not improve, as Scripture warns that people's hearts have grown cold. However, I tell you this: when you know your worth and understand the God you prioritize in your heart—the God you have committed to serve until your last breath—you can find strength and comfort.

Martin Luther made an insightful observation in his "Table Talk." He noted that God and the devil take opposite approaches to fear. The Lord allows us to experience fear so that He can ultimately comfort us and relieve it. In contrast, the devil lulls us into a false sense of security with pride and sin, only to later overwhelm us with fear and despair.

This week, I encourage you to make this declaration: "I don't have to fear or despair because I know my worth—in Him."
